CAMERAS: Back to the Basics?

Where do I start…
I have a basic Nikon point and shoot camera (coolpix) but I was thinking about moving on up to the big cameras (Digital 35mm).

I have no Idea what all the terminology is
EOS
SLR
30D
450D
Can someone help me with all the terminology including the terms I probably don’t even have listed b/c I haven’t seen them before.

ALSO, I was given a Bausch and lomb telephoto scope for free:

and was wondering what the best camera would be to get. Would any new Digital 35 mm work as long as I have the right adapter and “T-mount”?

I will be taking various pictures: Nature(Animals), Surfing, Moon, sunsets
Any suggestions that would be along with appr. camera? And, since I am a newbie, would a cheaper 300$ ebay priced camera be better for me I was looking for the best bang for the newbie buck. Im just starting out any suggestions?

Okay one step at at time:

I use my Nikon D200 using a “T-Mount” on my Celestron telescope.

* Sunsets, landscapes and architectural, a 12-24mm lens
* Animals and surfing, a 70-300mm lens
* Basic general lens, like a 24-70mm lens

The most bang for the buck right now is the Nikon D40 with a 18-55mm lens (under $500)

To answer your four questions:

EOS – Canon’s name for there auto-focus system of 35mm camera’s
SLR – Single Lens Reflex … a 35mm camera .. DSLR is the digital version, usually using the same body frame
30D – one of the camera models made by Canon
450D – the newest entry level DSLR made by Canon

You are always running a risk when buying on eBay unless you are an experience photographer and even then it is a craps shoot… best way to go is to by locally using craigslist.
