Film City: Lights, Camera, Action- An insight into the Hindi film industry by Pushpitha Wijesinghe
Mumbai, formerly known as Bombay is one of the largest metropolises in India. It is home to over 19 million people and is a Mecca of culture and booming industry. Formed of seven islands that evolved into a fishing colony, Mumbai has come far since its humble roots emerging as a trading town in the 18th century. It was also an instrumental base for the Indian independence movement during the 20th century.
Today, Mumbai is known as the commercial and entertainment hub of India. It is home to what can be considered the largest film industry outside Hollywood: Bollywood. The Indian film industry can trace its roots back to the early 20th century when the country launched its first silent feature film known as Raja Harishchandra. From this point onwards the Indian film industry rapidly grew as films became more popular as a source of entertainment in India. By 1931 Bollywood had its first feature film to include sound and by the 1970′s had surpassed its western counterpart in movie production, churning out films by the hundreds each year.
Film City was setup in Mumbai in around 1911 by the late great V. Shantaram a prominent actor and director. It was meant as a place where directors, actors and other associated people in the film industry could work under one roof. The sprawling complex boasts state of the art film equipment, detailed sets and the latest production equipment.
The Filmalaya Studio as it is also known is located on the outskirts of town near the Aarey Colony. It should be noted that there is generally no public admittance without prior appointment. So visitors should notify the relevant authorities before heading out to the location.
