Profile Photos Make or Break Your Profile   by Daniel Ovieda

What is the first thing you notice when you are looking through online dating profiles? The pictures. Our potential soul mate’s picture is the very first thing that we stare at when we view search results. Our emotions demand the picture to be clicked on so we can see the big version, and after we have decided that he or she is attractive enough we look at the rest of the profile.

As shallow as this may seem, it is true for most of us. This is the reason why you absolutely must have good photos of yourself when you attempt online dating. Having accurate, well shot photos of yourself will put you above the competition immediately. On top of that, you cannot just have one photo – you have to have several.

Let’s face it – most of us do not own expensive digital SLR cameras with tripods, and are experts at adjusting the settings so pictures come out perfect. I am here to give you simple advice on the photos that will get more people looking at you, and give you tips on how to take these photos.

Smile when you take the shot.

Whether you are a man or a woman, no one wants to communicate with someone who looks angry in their profile pictures. When you look positive and happy more people will want to view your profile and send you messages. For women, being playful and flirty in your picture will be even more inviting for men – it could be perceived as if you are flirting directly with them.

Avoid taking your own pictures.

Social networking teenagers are often seen taking their own pictures – whether in the mirror, using a webcam, or pointing their point and shoot cameras at an awkward angle – these types of pictures are seen too often. For the younger generation it’s acceptable and even desired, but for the mature audience it does not fly.

Do not use pictures that do not portray your current image.

By this I mean do not use old pictures. If age has not been flattering to you, do not expect that you can meet a date who has only seen your old picture and not have them walk away or have an awkward night. Your date will not appreciate the fact that you deceived them and off the bat they will lose a certain amount of trust in you, if not all of it.

Use pictures that are (at the maximum) three months old or newer. In addition, use photos that contain only you. Do not crop people out and leave their arm around you or part of their body in the shot.

Now that you have an idea of what kinds of photos are best, let’s look at some tips for enhancing them.

Lighting.

Lighting is a crucial factor in photos. It can cause your nose to look big, make your face look shiny – an entire array of things. Natural soft light works best when you take your own photos because artificial light or flash on a camera can alter the pictures color.

Makeshift tripods.

Most people own a point and shoot digital camera – what most do not own are tripods. First, find a ledge – maybe a counter, book shelf, or table that you can set your camera on. Be sure to have it about eye level as you are standing. Next, put your camera on a ten second timer and place it on the spot you have chosen. Press the shoot button; take your position, smile and pose! It may take a few attempts to master, but it is a good alternative when you are alone.

Try an interesting angle.

Play with different angles in your shots. You could find a certain angle that accents your features better than others.

Do not take just one photo.

Take several. The more photos you take of yourself, the more you have to choose from. Upload at least three photos: a head shot, a body shot, and a shot of you doing something interesting. Having more photos means more people will view your profile – which increases your chance of finding that special someone sooner.
