What is the best digital Camera Lens to use for portraits and close up faces?
I have a 18-200mm nikon lens. Is this the only lens I really need to bother using since it covers the full range? Or is there a better lens I should be using for portraits and close up faces? Would the quality and detail be the same?
That lens will work fine, just be sure and remember to not use the wide angle portion of the lens and move in close to the subject. This will give a distored view of the person’s face.
Always be sure you have the lens set to at least 50mm, 80mm would be even better. With the crop factor of the camera, a lens setting of 80mm will give you the effective zoom length of 120mm. which is a very nice, flattering portrait length.
Set your f stop to as low a number as the lens will allow at that focal length, and place the focal point on the eye nearest to the camera. Do not let the camera automatically select a focal point… 9 times out of 10 it will be WRONG.
