How to blank-en a miniDV tape when there is video in it? and others?

Hello,
I want to ask: If I can remove a miniDV’s video and audio, in the tape ie when u buy a NEW miniDV tape there is NO information on it,

I would like to ask if I can do the same, or almost the same, to a not so fresh mini DV tape, As a asked so many questions before even though I am quite new to the Tape world =P

And also in am also wondering SP and LP , Which one is better in quality As I’ve told you I’m not that good DV tape knowledge . I have however Two Brands DV tapes one brand is JVC and the other brand is Sony I just want to know how different are they.

As JIH said cover the lens cap and then press record, but you will still pick up any sound that is around, so if you camera has a mic input then put a (normally 3.5mm jack plug in it) which turns off the internal mic, if you can turn the internal mic gain to zero. this will clear off any video that’s on the tape by recording a black video.

If you want to return it to an unrecorded state, (newly purchased) then you will need either a Degausser (very expensive)

Or a strong Magnet, careful as this can damage the tape. the best ones to use are from hard drives. take a hard drive apart and remove the magnets, move it over the tape a few times and then it will be clear.

SP Standard play (some call it short play) a 60 minute tape wil last about 60 minutes LP long play, 60 minute tape last for around 90 minutes. LP is lower quality, some as LP on VHS recorders.

There are two schools of thought, My opinion and experience, I never mix tapes I always use Sony, Other people use JVC again they never mix them. the reason for this is that, although they say the tapes are the same, even today the use a different lubrication and when they mix it can clog the heads, the result you need to keep on cleaning the heads, getting unrecorded parts of the tape, if its bad you need to send the camera to be cleaned.
