What is a good size Memory Card for a Nikon D5000?

I would like to be able to take some videos and pictures so how much room is best for both?

Much will depend on how you shoot. I shoot mostly RAW (NEF) files and they are larger, so I would shop for 8GB and 16GB Memory Cards. Also, the D5000 can do video, if that if of interest to you then I would have some extra storage on hand while out shooting, so an extra card can not hurt.

I like the Sandisk brand cards but there are other good brands (like Lexar, & Kingston). I did a quick look and here are some basic price I found on Sandisk cards:

8GB: prices starting at $20
16GB: prices starting at $60

Cards are avialable at various quality levels. In the Sandisk line I go for at least one notch above the regular cards which is either the better “Ultra” Sandisk cards or the best “Extreme” Sandisk cards. Also Sandisk (and other brands) have cards that are labeled and made to perform well for video which you will want to check out if you are going to use the video feature of the D5000.
