what’s the difference between Polaroid 690 film and Polaroid 600 film? can both be used in the same camera?

it seems to be cheaper all-around, and i have a newer model camera.

Polaroid Type 600 is an integral film (all one piece) with the battery in the film packet itself. Most of the Polaroid Cameras that most people have seen and used use Type 600 Film. If the film ejects itself after you push the button, then it likely uses Type 600.

Polaroid Type 690 is a peel apart film that is 3.25×4.25 inches. There is no Battery in the film pack itself, and after you take the picture, you have to pull out a paper tab and pull the film through rollers. The film develops for a specific amount of time (depending on ambient temperature), and is peeled apart. In some ways, it’s rather similar to venerable old Type 669 Film – a film I’ve much experience with when it comes to lifting the emulsions from the film base.

If you have a newer model camera, I’m going make a guess that Polaroid Type 690 will not work for your camera. If the Impossible Project is successful, you will be able to get more affordable Type 600 film. Type 690 film will not work for a few reasons.

1) Different Size: The Type 600 film is not the same size as Type 690. The pack will not physically fit inside of the camera.

2) Different ISO: Type 600 film is 600 ISO. Type 690 is 100 ISO. This would make the camera consistantly underexposing the film by around 2 and a half stops, making the pictures themselves way too dark.

3) No Battery Pack in Film: Even if you could somehow make the pack itself fit in the camera, and work a way keep the camera from underexposing the film, it still would not work because the Type 690 film does not have the battery inside of the film pack. The battery powers the light meter, the shutter, and the drive system that forces the film out of the camera through the rollers to start development all would be completely inoperable. In essense, the lack of a battery makes the camera a paper weight, even if loaded with the film.

I wish I could tell you more… I know some cameras that work with Type 690 and the Fuji replacement to the film – FP-100C. Like the LandCamera 100 series, 200 series, 300 series, 400 series, and others like the Minute Maker and the Reporter.
