Sony Alpha DSLR-A100, is it a good camera?

I have it right now, but the lens broke somehow and now I need a new all purpose lens for it. What’s a good one that’s not too expensive? or should I just buy an entirely new camera? I was looking at the Nikon D60. I’m new to photography so bear with me!

If you’re seriously considering an upgrade then ignore the Nikon D60. Its been discontinued and replaced by the D3000/5000. Since you have experience with a Sony DSLR take a look at the A330 which has Live View. Keep in mind that Sony has two features lacking in the D3000/5000 – an in-camera focus motor and in-camera image stabilization. With either of the Nikon models if you want auto focus then you have to buy Nikon’s AF-S lenses.

Also, don’t forget that your A100 and every other Sony DSLR can use every Minolta Maxxum AF lens made since 1985. There are a lot of good used lenses available. One of the best is the Maxxum AF 70-210mm f4 zoom – the fabled “beer can”. I own and use the manual focus model on my Minolta 35mm film cameras and its an excellent lens.
