Can i use my Nikon D40 and use a lighting system?

Well i notice on the D40 it doesn’t have sync input so you can attach a lighting system and i understand the D40 was probally not targeted at doing studio portraits, but can i still use some sort of wireless remote set up to fire the lighting?

Yes you can!
All you need is a hot shoe to PC adapter, that’s a little piece that slides into your hotshoe and has a PC connector. Then connect your trigger cord to it and go!

You can get one for under $10 at B&H:

Or at about the same price in many other camera stores. You probably can’t buy it in big consumer electronics stores like Best Buy though…

Of course you can use those expensive $200+ a piece wireless triggers too, but unless you must move around, like shooting an event (wedding, etc) and want some fill lights around you – it’s a big overshoot.
